At a dark moonless night, far away from the city, the sky looks like an amazing painting, Hundreds, no Thousands, no Millions of shining stars! As our ancestors looked at the same sky, and many questions later; humans began the journey of discovering the truth about our existence in this universe.
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences, dated back to the pre-history times, before writing, and before structured civilizations, we documented what we saw in the sky, and what came from the sky!
Paintings in caves, showed our early fixation, and the mystery around it. Some of the oldest civilizations were early astronomers, watched the sky, categorized constellations, and created astrological symbols to identify the celestial objects in the sky, how they move, and how they are arranged. Some of these civilizations are the Egyptians, Indians, Chinese, Greek, Arab and Persian.
What all were fascinated about, wasn’t only the nature and movement of these objects in the skies, but more, what are they like? Is there any life form on any of them? Are we alone?
Optical telescope were developed over 400 years, to help us see those objects closer and closer, Radio telescope were developed later in early 30’s, they surveyed our skies for radio signals coming naturally from other solar systems and stars.
And then SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) was born (watch the movie: Contact). We figured out if we, as intelligent beings transmit radio waves, through our radio and TV broadcasts, maybe someone else are using the same technology out there! Maybe we can detect their intelligent radio signals! Don’t get excited though, we heard from no one yet! Does that mean we are alone? Or maybe no one uses radio waves!
NASA’s Apollo programs, Mars Exploration programs…..what did we find? Nothing!! Maybe we are alone after all?
For our next article , think about this, If you stay home and open your door, set the table lit the candles, and decided you are having dinner with a Tiger, you wait, and wait….and the Tiger doesn’t show, we conclude, Tigers do not exist !
But we know they do, however they have their own agenda and their own life, having dinner with us (or having us for dinner) may not be on their agenda, remember “Absence of Evidence, is not an Evidence of Absence”!
